The first, is that the Green gets its name from a pub (now a private house) which went by the name of "The Elephant". The second, is that an elephant belonging to a travelling circus in early Victorian times, came to a sticky end and was buried under the Green. We know which account we prefer (especially as it scares my son on dark, windy nights!). There are at least three or four houses in the vicinity whose names refer to elephants, so there is definitely a story to be unravelled we think.
