It is over four months since I went for a walk on the beach in Ballybunion. So, after a long summer absence, it was good to return there on Sunday afternoon [15 September 2019] for lunch in Daroka and a walk on the beach after the Parish Eucharist in Saint Brendan’s Church, Kilnaughtin, Tarbert.
It was good to see that Daroka has returned to serving Sunday lunches, with its wonderful menu and its engaging wine list.
Although Saturday felt like a late summer day in this part of the south-west, Sunday was cloudy and misty as two of us drove along the north Kerry cost from Tarbert to Ballybunion.
But families seemed to be taking one of the last opportunities to enjoy a weekend opportunity at their holiday homes, mobile homes and the beaches of Ballybunion.
Some brave swimmers and surfboarders were even hardy enough to plunge into the Atlantic waters.
The tide was out, and after lunch in Daroka we went for a long walk from the cliffs on the north side of Ladies’ Beach to the rocks at the south end of the Men’s Beach.
Hopefully, summer has not come to a final close. But even as we move into autumn, I am looking forward to more walks on the beaches of Ballybunion … and Sunday lunches in Daroka.
