Au quai? The quays of Wexford (Photograph: Patrick Comerford)
Patrick Comerford
When I was living in Wexford, the Quay was always known as the Kay – Kay to rhyme with Tay, rather than Quay to rhyme with Tea.
As in the Quay Wall, Wexford Quay or Kilmore Quay.
Or should I be talking about say the Quay of Wexford as in the Quai d’Orsay on the left bank of the Seine in Paris?
Perhaps those who are sniffy about this should think not of “Wexford peasant” but French en passant.
To the Quay? Au Quai? OK?
