Contributing to a new book

Patrick Comerford

I am delighted to hear that Treasures of Irish Christianity Volume III is about to be to be published. This new book is being launched by the former TD and Minister Mary O’Rourke, in Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth, on Saturday 4 July 2015.

I am one of the contributors to this third volume of Treasures of Irish Christianity, edited by Professor Salvador Ryan, who is Professor of Ecclesiastical History in Maynooth.

This volume looks at ‘the Irish abroad’ from the earliest centuries to the present day, with a special emphasis on the historical contribution of Irish missionaries.

The topics include a 17th century Church of Ireland clergyman’s account of being captured by North African pirates; the Irish priest who debated with the American abolitionist John Brown before his execution in 1859; Irish military chaplains in World War I; the Irish missionary who met Mao Tse-tung; and much more.

Treasures of Irish Christianity Volume III follows two highly successful volumes, Treasures of Irish Christianity Volumes I and II, edited by Salvador Ryan and Dr Brendan Leahy, who is now Bishop of Limerick. They which were published to great acclaim in 2012 and 2013.

I contributed two chapters and photograph to Volume II, which was launched in June 2013. I understand Volume III is also richly illustrated, although I still have to see a copy.

Treasures of Irish Christianity Volume III, To the Ends of the Earth, edited by Salvador Ryan is published by Veritas (ISBN13: 9781847305947; ISBN10: 1847305946).
